Number 13: More Than Good Luck

Number 13: More Than Good Luck

For some, numbers carry superstition. For others, meaning.
For me, the number 13 stopped being just a number and became a symbol of rebirth, transformation, and new beginnings—not in theory, but through lived experience, step by step, backpack on my shoulders, along the Camino de Santiago.
The documentary Camino13 was born the way true miracles often are: not fully planned, but guided by a deeper purpose that revealed itself as we walked. It was my 13th Camino, and without intending it, we were 13 pilgrims. We conducted several interviews, which ended up being 13 in total. The first script had 13 pages. Again and again, the number appeared—like a quiet whisper reminding us that something meaningful was unfolding. What many consider an unlucky number became, for us, a reminder: every ending carries the seed of a new beginning.
In a phone conversation with a friend before my Camino, he told me something I didn’t fully understand at the time: “Ale, come back to yourself.” When our call ended, I sat in silence, considering the emotional weight I was carrying and that I could no longer ignore. I needed to let go. I needed to be reborn. What’s remarkable is that when I looked up the meaning of the number 13, I found exactly that: rebirth. And that is precisely what I experienced.
Starting the Camino, you think you’re carrying only the essentials: clothes, boots, a water bottle, maybe something meaningful. After a few kilometers, you discover something deeper: what truly weighs you down is not what you carry on the outside, but what you carry within. We carry stories, fears, postponed dreams, and wounds that have yet to heal. I, too, carried unanswered questions and emotions that needed understanding.
The Camino didn’t give quick answers, but it offered experiences that transformed into wisdom. Each sunrise became a gift. Each blister, a lesson. Each silence, a conversation with myself. And slowly, I began to let go of expectations, guilt, and outdated versions of myself. That’s when I understood something transformative: many of the things I thought were burdens were actually gifts in disguise, waiting to be understood.
But the Camino is not only an inner journey—it is also a constant encounter with others.
I did not walk this path alone. I walked alongside Jesús Aranguren, the film’s director, and together we had the privilege of listening to and capturing real stories from pilgrims and those who live along the Camino. Stories of faith, grief, gratitude, searching, and hope. Every person who stood in front of the camera was a gift.
On the Camino, stories don’t stay with the one who lives them. They echo. They travel. They reach others exactly when they are needed. When we share who we are, we create space for others to do the same.
I remember looks that spoke without words. Hugs between strangers that felt like family.
Shared silences that healed more than words ever could. Because sharing doesn’t always mean speaking. Sometimes it means listening. Walking beside someone in silence. Simply being present.
And perhaps that is the most powerful gift we can offer: our authentic presence. Over time, I came to understand that we all carry something within us—stories, wounds, lessons, love. And we are not here only to carry them, but to transform them, and in some way, share them.
If there is one thing the Camino has taught me—and what Camino13 seeks to convey—it is that the most meaningful gifts are not bought or wrapped. They are lived, felt, and transformed into awareness.
Today, I understand that what we carry are not burdens, but lessons. And what we share are not objects, but experiences lived from the soul. We are all walking a Camino, whether we realize it or not. And perhaps the greatest gift is not arriving in Santiago, but returning to ourselves.
That is why the number 13 is no longer a superstition for me. It is a reminder that we can always begin again.
