Camino Letter

by Robert Bain | Houston, TX

These song lyrics are written to the tune of “Teach Your Children” by Graham Nash. YouTube audio of the 1970 Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young recording of that song here.

Good friends sitting poolside, sharing their plans as we talk.
They spoke of a trip to France and Spain to do the Camino walk.

Research late into the night.
It’s a spiritual trail. For me it feels right.
Started training to walk the way.
A venture that will take 30 days.

Received a shell at Jack and Linda’s home. Pinned to my backpack to carry along, as a reminder that I belong.

Grateful for a gift of Euros to use in Paris when I land,
A stone for the Cruz de Ferro to leave behind
my spiritual burdens.

Carried a letter from my wife.
Opened after I disembarked from the plane.
Her words touched me each day as
I made my trek across Spain.

Her prayers for my “safe travel and return, enjoy life as a Pilgrim, come back with lessons from the Camino de Santiago you’ve learned”, Love Heather.
