Every Step of the Way

En route to Santiago, here we go one foot in front of the other. It’s OK to take it slow, pilgrims on a journey with smiles and grace and all the adventure keeping up with the pace. The sun on the vines and the shells in view, calm your mind as you navigate through.

My husband, a dear friend, and I set out from Baiona to Santiago in May 2025. Our pilgrimage journey was to commemorate milestone birthdays of 55 and 60, to pay homage to the joys of life, and to pray for those who are going through challenges. We weren’t sure what to expect on the Camino Portugués, but we were definitely prepared. Joining the American Pilgrims on the Camino was helpful, as were all the tips shared in Camino Portugués Facebook groups.

The Camino Portugués coastal route did not disappoint, with beautiful coastline coupled with sunshine. Our routine: set out after breakfast, our packs full of snacks, including nuts and an energy bar, plus a change of shoes and socks. About Mile 3, we would stop for our café con leche. About Mile 7, we would change our shoes and socks which was key to ensure that we did not get blisters. Hiking poles were handy when going up and down hills.

It took a day or two to master arriving at our day’s destination by 3 p.m. so we could eat lunch  before the restaurants closed for siesta. Obtaining two stamps per day in our credencial was fun! Our excitement grew as we passed many waymakers as we got closer and closer to Santiago.

We opted to stay in small boutique hotels rather than staying in albergues. It was like magic when our bags would appear at our next hotel. We averaged 13-15 miles a day and on Day 7 had the joy of arriving in Santiago, where we got to see the Botafumeiro swing during the cathedral Mass. We arrived an hour and a half before the Mass started to ensure we could get in.

Take time to snap a photo of a Camino horse, cat, vineyard, potted plants, or the culture in action. The Camino is a memorable adventure every step of the way.
