When I picked up The Joyful Gypsy Gal, I knew I wouldn’t be reading the story of a stranger. Mary Baldree is a friend, and years ago I invited her to join me on the Camino. In her book, she refers to it as “the invitation that changed everything.” At the time, we planned to walk a portion together; but as often happens on the Camino, the journey had other plans.
Shortly after starting, Mary canceled all of her reservations and chose to follow the Camino in her own way. We ended up walking separate journeys, and in many ways that decision captures the heart of this book. The Camino is about learning to trust the path, embrace uncertainty, and remain open to transformation. Mary did exactly that.
The Joyful Gypsy Gal beautifully weaves together Mary’s Camino experiences in Spain with the larger pilgrimage of her life. Each chapter begins with a single word for reflection, setting the tone for the stories and insights that follow. Thoughtful reflection questions at the end of each chapter encourage deeper personal exploration and journaling opportunities.
What I admire most about Mary’s writing is her authenticity. She shares moments of joy, challenge, discovery, and growth with honesty and grace. Her story is not simply about walking across Spain; it is about finding the courage to listen to one’s inner voice and follow where it leads.
As I read, I found myself reflecting not only on Mary’s experiences but also on my own Camino journey and the many unexpected turns that shape our lives. Her book captures something every pilgrim eventually learns: we may begin with a plan, but the Camino often teaches us something entirely different—and far more valuable.
Whether you have walked the Camino or simply find yourself at a crossroads in life, The Joyful Gypsy Gal offers wisdom, encouragement, and gentle invitations to reflect on your own path. It is a warm and inspiring reminder that life itself is a pilgrimage, and that sometimes the most meaningful journeys begin when we let go of our expectations and trust the way forward.
