Julio’s Pack

by Bob McLeaish | Indianapolis, IN

“The Camino Provides” is not just an old adage used by those who’ve traveled the Camino de Santiago. It’s a way of thinking as we walk through life. Those words are an acknowledgment, an acceptance, that we will acquire what we need along the way.

I first met Julio at a gathering of our American Pilgrims Hoosiers on the Camino Chapter. Julio was listening to a couple and sipping a glass of white wine when he noticed me and offered some wine. I accepted, and listened in. This, I was to learn over the next few years, was a hint of Julio’s generous spirit. The topic was walking, and the couple Julio was listening to had recently walked the Camino. My wife, Linda, and I were interested in walking with the Hoosiers chapter so that someday we could walk our own Camino. Julio was somewhat of a regular on the walk from southern France to Santiago de Compostela, as the Camino was his happy place. So much so that he bought a place right on the path, in Santo Domingo de la Calzada. He was a seasoned veteran of world travel as well, so Julio always had lots of stories to share.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Julio joined our neighborhood outdoor concerts for a little entertainment and safely distanced community. Each week we were able to share a couple stories and a like number of beers. He was a joy to see coming, this worldly, kind, fun-loving friend.

Julio, ever the world traveler, went to visit his family in Argentina. While he was there, he felt sick and went to the doctor. Unfortunately, the diagnosis was a brain tumor. Although the surgery was successful, he did not survive further chemo treatments. After a time, his daughters came to Indianapolis to settle his affairs, and there was a wonderful celebration of Julio’s life. His daughters donated his hiking gear to the Hoosiers on the Camino Chapter, which brings me to his pack. One of the chapter coordinators asked if I’d like to use Julio’s gear on our walk.

When Linda and I eventually walked our Camino in 2024, along with my memories of Julio, I happily carried my few belongings in Julio’s backpack. I have a feeling he would like that something of his graced the Camino again. I still think of him and his generous spirit. Buen Camino, Julio Tierno!
