A Shared Journey

by Robert Bain | Houston, TX

These song lyrics honor those who walked beside me on the Camino Portugués in May 2024 when I journeyed to remember my mom. Written to the tune of “God Bless the U.S.A.” by Lee Greenwood. YouTube audio of Greenwood’s song here.

Tomorrow when I wake. Will forget about that day.
A turbulent flight across the ocean from the USA
Holding on to mom’s spirit,
in a small box carried on the way
It’s 2024 honoring her in early May

Connecting with pilgrims, hearing their stories and laughs.
Some, also seek comfort from a loved one that passed
Each step, trail markers direct us on our journey
I stay unplugged to unwind. I’m where I need to be.

Mornings we wake up, face challenges to our day,
kneel and ask the lord for guidance as we pray
I’m searching for answers to questions unresolved
vulnerable with gratitude without acting proud

Arrived in Santiago, in line with tired friends to receive a
validated letter “Camino completed”
The rewarded Compostela, all in Latin. Asked for added
words in my own pen.
“To Mom, You shared my journey as my guide and made
this Happen”

Staring out a window on my flight home
thinking about the Camino and new friends across the
pond

Pondering their search for the life I hope they find, and my
promise to share the stories of our amazing Camino time.
