Backpack Memories
Backpack Memories
by Robert Bain | Houston, TX
A song parody after “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” made popular by The Tokens and first written and recorded as “Mbube” by Soloman Linda.
Hauling backpack added water and snack taking steps to start the day
Will backtrack for an item left between here and the albergue
(chorus)
awalkaway awalkaway allaway allaway
awalkaway awalkaway allaway allaway
Sat down unzipped backpack and shuffled things around
Was it something like a Brierley’s guide
hidden deep inside
Everything is accounted for but what is not in view
Check bunk bed where I laid my head
Packing list missing too
(chorus)
On the bunk bed in the side rail found it as I dug
Missing invaluable piece: one quality earplug
(chorus)
Every night reload backpack no need for returning
Every day my back carries my home along on this journey of learning
(chorus)
Following the arrows back on track searching for a stop
Short rest unhooked backpack ordered cappuccino added cream on top
Helped a peregrino struggling backpack causing pain
Adjusted her belt tightened every strap
she thanked me I’ll always remember her name
Oh memories of the Camino carrying my backpack
the next trip is on the horizon I’m already packed
Oh the memories good times filling the pages
It’s the backpack on my back that survived all the stages
awalkaway awalkaway allaway allaway
awalkaway awalkaway allaway allaway
(repeat, fade)
