The group stopped at this site to read a poem in tribute to Leo LaRue, a pilgrim and friend who died the week prior after he was struck by a motor vehicle while walking his dogs. Baldwin says being active with his local American Pilgrims chapter has helped him find a sense of continuing community that allows him to relive his Camino experiences anew while helping others foster their own. Continuing Community

by John Baldwin | Virginia Beach, VA

When I returned from walking the Camino Francés in 2015, I attended a meeting of the Southeast Virginia Chapter of American Pilgrims on the Camino led by Donna Looney-McGlynn and Ellen Eddowes. Here I found a group with whom I could share my experiences on the Camino, and folks who could relate and empathize.

When Ellen had to relinquish her leadership, I came on board as co-coordinator and editor of the monthly newsletter. Every month we now host two events: a monthly coffee where those interested in walking a Camino can find information and support, and a walk, talk, or social event for those who have walked a Camino, and like me, are seeking continuity to their Camino experience.

I attend almost all of the coffees and events, and in doing so have relived my two Camino walks over and over, but with new eyes each time. I share in the excitement of someone who is imagining a Camino walk; I rejoice with those who are returning, brimming with energy and new insights; I feel the pain of those who suffered along the way; I am delighted to hear of triumphs over adversity; I enjoy sharing my “wisdom”—albergues I found worth stopping at; items to consider packing; alternative routes; strategies for unexpected happenings; and practical information that may come in handy.

I find that my skills as a listener are appreciated. Everyone has stories to tell, but not everyone is willing to listen with understanding. I may not walk another Camino, but being active in a continuing community that loves and values the Camino experience has been exceedingly rewarding.
