This is not a normal pilgrim walk! One might call it more of an excursion! Join fellow pilgrims for a short walk in Chippokes State Park to the beach where we will be able to find Chesapecten Jeffersonius, which are extinct prehistoric scallop shells. Many have worn these shells on their pilgrimage, a symbolic tie between Virginia and Santiago.
If you don’t have a VA State Park Pass, the parking fee is $7. Bring cash as the front gate is not normally staffed. Go straight after the front gate and continue down, making a right on Plantation Road (there’s an old-timey tractor on the corner). Go straight for almost a mile and you will see the Farm Museum on your right, and a small parking lot on your left. Park in the lot; we will gather there. If there isn’t enough parking (because others arrive before us), we will direct you where to park and can shuttle folks.
Low tide is at approx. 12:30 pm, which will give us plenty of time to walk down the beach to a prime collecting spot. The beach is about 1/3 mile (asphalt) from the parking lot, then we will walk approximately .5 miles down the beach (sand). There are other fossils to collect, so bring a bag or backpack, a bottle of water and perhaps a snack.
