Are you ready for a forest trail full of abandoned houses, old cemeteries, and spooky stories? Join chapter member Megan Downey on Halloween morning for a 6-mile loop hike at Bull Run Mountain. It will be an easy-moderate hike on a well-groomed trail. Dress for the weather, and bring water, snacks, and hiking poles, if you want the practice. Festive hats, shirts, and gear are encouraged for “Halloween spirits.” The hike will take 2.5 – 3 hours. A porta potty is available in the parking lot. No pets please.
Bull Run Mountain Natural Area Preserve occupies a series of rocky ridges and steep valleys on Virginia’s northern piedmont. Straddling Fauquier and Prince William Counties, the preserve’s 2486 acres are owned by the Virginia Outdoors Foundation, a state-supported organization dedicated to protecting open space across the Commonwealth. The preserve harbors outstanding examples of several forest and woodland community types, including some that are rare in Virginia. After the hike, consider joining us nearby at The Farm Brewery at Broad Run.
