This Sandia Mountain hike is part of the Explore ABQ Series. The hike will begin at the base of the Sandia Peak Tramway on the La Luz Connector Trail to the La Luz Trailhead on NM Route 333. This is a moderate level hike with an approximate 1,100 foot elevation gain. There is no scrambling up boulders, but a lot of ups and downs over rocks on a decently marked trail, giving your knees and legs a workout!

We will meet at the Upper Tram parking lot and head north on the trail for around 2.5 miles. The trail is minimally shaded. When we intersect the classic La Luz trail, we will head west one mile back to the La Luz trailhead. Water, hats, and decent hiking boots or trail shoes are essential. Hiking poles are definitely recommended. We take ample short breaks, taking in the beauty around us and to catch our breath! Hikers are invited to have lunch at the County Line post-hike.

Rich will need a volunteer (or two, depending on how many respond) with a large van or car that can seat 5-6 people to meet him at the La Luz trailhead (Rt. 333) at 8:30 a.m. Leave the van there (costs $5 or a Golden Eagle pass), and Rich will take the volunteer(s) in his car to the Upper Tram parking lot. We will use the van afterwards to ferry folks back to their cars at the Upper Tram parking lot. Everybody except the ‘ferries’ should park at the Upper Tram parking lot, although it may be crowded due to the Balloon Fiesta. If you don’t find a parking space at the upper Tram, park where you can and meet up at the Upper lot.

REMINDER: Please leave dogs at home per national protocol and insurance issues.

FACILITIES: No bathrooms are available on the hike route. Bathroom facilities are available before the hike at the Sandia Peak Tramway and at the La Luz parking lot.
