Scottsdale, AZ: Valley of the Sun Chapter, Granite and Cholla Mountain Loop Hike

Scottsdale McDowell Sonoran Preserve - Granite Mountain Trailhead - 31402 N 136th St, Scottsdale, AZ 85262. From Hwy 101 take Pima Rd North for 6.8 miles to Dynamite Blvd. Turn right on Dynamite and follow for 6.1 miles (name changes to Rio Verde drive about halfway) to N. 136th Street. You will pass Fraesfield Trailhead just before 136th. Turn left onto 136th and follow it for 2 miles. Granite Mountain Trailhead will be on your left.

MEETING PLACE: Horse Trailer Parking Lot, First Water Road. From Apache Junction take Hwy 88 North. ¼ mile past Lost Dutchman state Park, turn right onto First Water Road (this is a Forest Service road but does not require 4X Drive). Follow First Water Road for 2 miles. Horse Trailer Parking lot will be on the left. Look for Georgy (white Ford Ranger) near Trail Head sign. Address for GPS: Location: 33.483135, -111.449882

This is a moderate 6-mile loop hike in the Superstition Wilderness. We will pass Hackberry Spring and enjoy the views through the canyon and up into Garden Valley. With an overall elevation gain of 560’, there are a few rocky descents and a short climb up to Garden Valley. The trail is in fair condition…

Waddell, AZ: Valley of the Sun Chapter, Mesquite Canyon Trail Hike

White Tanks Mountain Regional Park entrance, west of the 303 on Olive Ave. , 20304 W. White Tank Mountain Road Waddell, AZ 85355. Address for GPS: 33.59252296021357, -112.51106736707311. We will meet at the end of the parking lot for Ramada #7. From Park Entrance follow W White Tank Mountain Rd for 2.1 miles. Turn LEFT onto N Waterfall Canyon Rd for 0.8 miles. Turn LEFT onto Ramada Way to the end. Depending on traffic, allow about 10 minutes to drive from the park entrance to the TH. There is a fee of $7 per vehicle to enter the park.

The Mesquite Canyon Trail is in the White Mountains Regional Park. We’ll start at the Ramada #7 parking lot (see Location above). The 750-ft. climb up to the high point saddle is about 1.5 miles on a well-maintained trail. There are a few places with loose rocks, but nothing technical. We can stop periodically on…
