Virgil NY: Finger Lakes Chapter, Virgil Mountain Hike *Cancelled*

Jul 17, 2021 10:30AM—2:30PM

Location

Parking at the trail head is extremely limited, just a few cars so we should park in the dirt lot for Greek Peaks Chair 5 remote area (not the main ski area!) on Tone Road in Virgil. Please note, Tone Road has two intersections with RT 392 but there is a bridge out just east of the trailhead so you must use the western end of the road (closest to Greek Peak’s main area. The correct intersection of Tone Rd and RT 392 Is one mile east of the Greek Peak main area or 3.6 miles from the 4 corners in Virgil at the intersection of 392 and Rt 115 (road to Cortland). Coming from Messangerville on Rt 11, the correct intersection of Tone Rd is 3.5 miles along 392. Once on Tone Rd, go about 0.4 miles to the parking area on the right. We will assemble there and walk as a group to the actual trailhead. The very optimistic Google Maps drive times from the city centers are 46 minutes from Syracuse, 32 minutes from Ithaca, 37 from Binghamton, and 3 hrs from Buffalo. These do not allow for traffic or coffee stops Google maps does list the trailhead as “Finger Lakes Trail – Tone Road Trailhead”. GPS 42.500659, -76.125538

**Cancelled due to weather**

Come hike the Virgil Mountain Hike with the Finger Lakes Chapter on a beautiful summer’s day led by Dick Porterfield! We can adjust the distance based on weather and group consensus but plan on around 6 miles with an elevation gain of about 800 ft. Bring a lunch/snack —we’ll stop for a picnic along the way. Expect to spend 4ish hours on this hike.

Our hike will begin with a 0.3 mile walk on a nearly flat dirt road to the actual trail head. From there, the next 0.7 miles is a good climb. The first section of the trail is beautiful, the trail itself is well prepared, and the footing is good, but it is an aerobic section. We will regroup at several points and wait for everyone. Once we are past that section, the hike levels out and we will continue on the FLT and some dirt roads and powerlines with some nice views. We may venture out on Greek’s ski trails to enjoy the view. We can adjust the distance based on weather and group consensus but plan on around 6 miles with an elevation gain of about 800 ft.
