Join us on Saturday, May 3, for a hike in Shenandoah National Park along Dark Hollow Falls and Rose River Loop.
We will meet outside the Harry F. Byrd, Sr., Visitor Center at Big Meadows (near milepost 51 on Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park) at 10am. There are bathrooms and plenty of parking there. Carpooling is encouraged, as there is a fee to enter Shenandoah National Park.
Since we are usually a large group with differing hiking interests and training preferences, we are going to have two trail options with different hike leaders.
Option 1 is 4.3 miles. There are some steep and rocky sections as you ascend Dark Hollow Falls, so hiking poles are highly recommended. Hike highlights include the Cave Cemetery and 70′ Dark Hollow Falls.
Option 2 is 6.3 miles. While this hike is rated “moderate”, please be advised that the last half of this loop is mostly rocky and uphill, providing a strenuous workout. Hiking poles are also highly recommended for this route. Hike highlights include 70′ Dark Hollow Falls, 67′ Rose River Falls, and several smaller falls along the Rose River route.
Following the hike, each group will have lunch at Big Meadows Wayside. Please note that hikers choosing option 2 will likely return later than the first group, and there may not be any overlap between the groups.
