Welcome the New Year with a hike and labyrinth walk at the end of the world! This 13-mile loop route starts at the historic Beach Chalet building at Ocean Beach. We’ll walk through Golden Gate Park, on a short section through city streets, then through the forested Presidio, by Andy Goldsworthy’s “Spire.” At the Golden Gate Bridge, we’ll enjoy the fresh sea air and sweeping views of the ocean and Marin Headlands. Next, we’ll follow the rugged coast heading south and walk the Lands End Labyrinth. We’ll continue along the coastal Lands End Trail to the Cliff House and end back at the Beach Chalet building, where we’ll cool our heels and have a casual bite at the Park Chalet restaurant.

About Labyrinths: For thousands of years, people have walked labyrinths as a way to get answers to their questions, practice slowing down, grieve, or meditate. They’ve also served as “substitute pilgrimages” for those who couldn’t undertake long journeys. When our group arrives at the Lands End Labyrinth, we’ll provide a short history of labyrinths and some instructions, and then you’re free to walk the path. Read more about labyrinths at the Veriditas and Labyrinthos websites.

Meet us at 9:30 AM for sign-in and briefing at the Beach Chalet building, just inside the doors next to the gift shop, located at 1000 Great Highway by Fulton St. We expect to arrive back around 5:00 PM. This is a moderately difficult, 13-mile loop with 1,240 feet total elevation gain. Mostly dirt trails with about 2.5 miles along city streets. This is a great opportunity to do some Camino training, but it’s best if you’ve done at least a 6-mile hike before. Open to all (members and non-members). Rain or shine. Led by chapter members, Sue López and Stephanie Dodaro.

RSVP: So that we reserve enough space at the Park Chalet restaurant, please email Stephanie at sdodaro@gmail.com with the number in your party by Thursday, January 9. RSVP not required if you’re just doing the hike.

GETTING THERE

By BART/Bus: From Montgomery BART/MUNI station, exit onto Market St. and catch the 5 Fulton bus west towards the beach/away from Ferry Building. Exit at Fulton and La Playa, then walk 1/2 block to Great Highway. Turn left on Great Highway to Beach Chalet. Ride approx. 40 minutes.

Carpooling from BART: If you want a ride or can give one, post a message here. Meet outside Civic Center BART station by 9:00 AM. Suggest exiting at 8th St. and meeting off busy Market St., e.g., by the Asian Art Museum.

By Car: For directions, use Google Maps.

Parking: Free, unlimited parking across from Beach Chalet building at Ocean Beach parking lot, as well as on Fulton St. and Lincoln Ave. Please double check signs to make sure there are no time restrictions. (Free parking at Beach Chalet building, BUT they may ticket you if you leave your car without immediately patronizing the restaurant.)

WHAT TO BRING: Water and sun protection, as there is little shade along the path. Bag lunch or snacks, or purchase along the way at Beach Chalet Gift Shop, Golden Gate Bridge Cafe, or Ilana Cafe. Layers as it might be sunny or cold, or both. Hiking poles optional.
