You almost certainly have seen The Way. Perhaps Walking the Camino—Six Ways to Santiago. If you go looking, you'll find dozens of Camino films and videos — full-length and shorts, dramas, travelogues, documentaries and introspections, enigmatic (Luís Buñuel!) — even a comedy (Saint-Jacques… La Mecque)! If you'd like some ideas, we'll suggest checking out the Film & Video page on the American Pilgrims website.
But rather than watch any of the better known films, we've chosen a relatively short one at 26 minutes: Something Grand by Canadian film director, writer and producer Matthew Anderson. Anderson is also an Affiliate Professor of Theological Studies at Concordia University, Montreal. In 2012 he walked with sound equipment and a camera over the Pyrenees to Santiago. He followed modern-day pilgrims asking one question: "Why are you here?" The resulting footage and interviews are sometimes surprising, sometimes touching but always revealing.
Some ideas: Had you seen this video before? What words would you use to recommend the film to others - or not? Why did it stand out - or not - among all of those that you've seen? Without going into details, what other film or video would you have suggested? Remember that these free Zoom meetings are limited to 40 minutes without re-initiating the event, so we'll be limiting participants to about two (!) minutes each. This will be a practice in being succinct!. There are always seem to be some technical issues at the start, so that two minutes X 15 attendees will about fill the time.
