CAMINITO AND SHELL CEREMONY
It has been a while since we have gathered, but we are back on it and going forward plan to offer a Caminito or gathering once a month or so. Our first spring event is a shell ceremony and Caminito in Upper Manhattan. We will take a few minutes to gather and then begin our walk together. We will first visit Uptown Trinity Cemetery where some famous New Yorkers reside, walk along the Hudson River and then to the streets of Washington Heights and Inwood to visit the shrine of Mother Cabrini, tour the beautiful Fort Tryon park and end at the Cloisters, a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Those who wish can spend an hour visiting the cloisters after the walk. The entry fee is by donation for NYC, NJ, and CT residents and students. Any visits will be staggered as the museum does not allow unscheduled groups. An alternate ending will be a meal or a toast at an area tapas or similar restaurant. We value our fur babies, but this is not a Caminito suitable for animals.
Meet:
We will meet on Saturday May 23 at 10:00 AM in front of the Hispanic Society at 3741 Broadway (between 155th and 156th Streets). Nearest trains are the #1 at 157th and the C at 155th, each two blocks from the meeting point. We will leave PROMPTLY at 10:15 and finish approximately 2:00 because of frequent stops or wanderings. Please check the weekend MTA schedules to avoid missing the group. We are hoping for good weather, but any cancellations will be announced via email by 7:00 AM on the day of.
Route and conditions:
Note that this is a linear walk that will end near where you can catch a #1 train or an A train. The walk will be approximately five or six miles including park and cemetery navigation, mostly along city sidewalks or paved park paths. Upper Manhattan has a slight incline to it with a few noticeable but inclines but no climbs. The pace will be steady on the walks but more leisurely within the cemetery and parks.
Bathrooms and breaks:
Bathrooms are located about an hour after the start and again at end of the walk plus one other bathroom break during the walk. Here, if the first bathroom might be far for commuters, I would say to use the ones on the train.
Bring: Water, hat, sunglasses, snacks, sunblock, and weather appropriate layers. Again, check the weather and dress appropriately. Indicate whether there is a lunch break or just snack breaks, to let pilgrims know how much and what type of food they might bring.
RSVP: to Gina, below.
