Let’s explore Elmwood Cemetery on our very own self guided walking tour! Famous stories include celebrities, politicians, generals, paupers and spies. The cast of characters runs the gamut from city founders to saloon owners, from outlaws to heroes. Nearly 80,000 Memphians rest beneath the soil of this 80-acre wooded cemetery. It is free to enter, but purchase of the self guided audio app to download to your phone is $10 and includes a map. After a stroll among the dearly departed, let’s gather for a picnic that’s rather light-hearted!
1. Park in the grass lot that is located to the LEFT of the bridge BEFORE you cross the bridge. There is is a sign for bus and event parking.
2. Meet at the cottage ~on the left as you enter Elmwood. There are picnic tables where we can assemble. Restrooms are there, too.
3. Go into the cottage or use the QR code at the signage to purchase the audio tour. The office gives you a map of the cemetery as a part of that purchase. $10.00
4. We will walk the audio tour and it should take us 1.5 -2 hours.
5. We will end back at the picnic tables to enjoy your picnic lunch that you brought with you.
6. Bring: Water, hat, sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes, picnic lunch.
Remember, you do not have to be a member of the national organization to join any of our events~ all are welcome!
