Come enjoy Summer Streets, to walk along car-free Broadway and Park Avenue amid walkers, joggers, boarders, and cyclists. It’s a festive event, with random entertainment and snacks. The third Saturday in August we’ll reverse the course and walk north to south, from Dyckman Street in Upper Manhattan to East 59th Street, about 6-7 miles, 3-4 hours, depending on stops. Moderate pace with many drop-out points.
Meet: Saturday, August 16, 9:30 a.m. at the Anne Loftus Playground on Dyckman and Broadway, through the gates at the SE corner of Dyckman and Broadway, near the restrooms (which will be open!). Use them. Take the the A or the #1 train to Dyckman Street. The A will drop you off across the street from the playground, and the #1 will drop you two or three blocks (depending on which side of the street you are on) East of it. If you take Metro North be sure to get the local and get off at Marble Hill. Dyckman Street is a 20-minute walk down Broadway from the station. We will walk at 9:45 A.M. sharp. If you arrive late, just follow the crowd down Broadway (see below).
Caminito stage: Our walk runs from Dyckman Street and Broadway to 110th to Park to 59th street. From 59th, peregrinos/as can continue south to Grand Central or Port Authority or west to Columbus Circle, but our Caminito ends at 59th and Park. No need to decide now.
Restrooms: Please use the restroom at Anne Loftus before we begin. We will have restroom stops at Columbia University Forum (125th Street) and in Central Park (which will be crowded). Final restroom for those who continue down on their own will be 550 Madison, a lovely outdoor space with coffee and possibly another food venue. Saturdays are iffy but there is always coffee.
Water and food: There are only two water fill-ups along the route, so bring a large bottle. At the end of the walk we can eat our brought lunches in Central Park or find a nearby place to eat inside out of the weather.
More info: The full program of Summer Streets has activities along the way. If you decide to stop and enjoy them, please let me know. You will then just follow the crowd down to wherever you decide to end your Caminito.
Bring: Hat, sunglasses, sunblock, lunch/snacks, and water. All the things. Water will be available for refillable bottles at NYC Water-on-the-Go fountains along the way or at the rest stops.
End of Walk: If you wish to continue another six miles down to the Brooklyn Bridge, feel free but you will be on your own. Just follow the crowd. Those ending at 59th will have the option to find a place to sit together.
Text Contact (day of hike only): Gina 347-842-5452. Please ID yourself if texting (I won’t have your name in my contacts) and if there is an emergency during the walk, call. Also let me know if you decide to leave the group to linger at one of the official Summer Streets rest stops or for whatever reason.
