Music is intrinsic to the Camino de Santiago, the now-revived pilgrimage route through Europe, across northern Spain to the cathedral city of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia. Indeed, the 12th-century tome that in some sense is the basis of the Camino, the Codex Calixtinus, has as its first book the treatise on music and sermons related to St. James. The Codex holds an important place in the history of the Camino and of western music.
Reaction was so great to St. Martin's Chamber Choir's 2019 concert using the Camino de Santiago as its inspiration that the choir has decided to record the repertoire of that concert as its next commercially released CD.
"The Camino de Santiago: Songs of Pilgrimage" will take the listener on a virtual pilgrimage on the Camino - from the first step, through Burgos, León and Palencia to the destination, Santiago de Compostela. Beginning and ending with music taken from the Codex, the journey itself will be represented by music of the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries composed in monasteries on the Caminos.
Colorado Front Range Chapter coordinator Gene McCullough will deliver a spoken narrative during the performance and will be giving pre-concert talks on the Camino, the Codex and the concert's music prior to each performance.
St. Martin's Chamber Choir was founded in 1994 as Colorado’s only year-round, fully professional choir. Further information and tickets are available through stmartinschamberchoir.org. This is not a Chapter event but it will be of interest to Chapter members. (Advisement: Chapter coordinator Gene McCullough was on the Board of Directors of St. Martin's for seven years.)
