Starting from the corner of Wilkes St and S Payne St, where there is one of the stone markers that delineated the border of the District of Columbia 200 years ago, we will visit or walk by the following sites: Alexandria National Cemetery, the nation’s first national cemetery, the U.S. Patent and Trade Office, the Washington Memorial at Shuter’s Hill with panoramic views at the top to DC and Maryland, Old Christ Church and Cemetery, where GW worshipped, The Spite House (check it out!), Market Square and the Saturday Farmer’s Market, the oldest continual farmer’s market in the U.S., King St and the Potomac waterfront, the Old Presbyterian Meeting House and its small cemetery, which includes the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier of the Revolutionary War, the courthouse where suffragettes were convicted and later imprisoned, sparking a nationwide protest and lunch/refreshments for those who wish to linger in Old Town. The hike length is about 6 miles, although anyone can peel off at any time if they wish to visit various sites like the Torpedo Alley Art Gallery with three floors of artists at work.
