Join David Ryan, author of 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: Albuquerque, for a hike at the Juan Tomas Open Space just east of Albuquerque.

Directions to Juan Tomas Open Space:

From I-40 East, take Exit 175 to Tijeras. Go 8.7 miles south on NM 337. Turn left on Oak Flat Road and go 2.7 miles east. Park in the area on the left, across from the junction with Anaya Road.

The 3.7-mile loop hike is not difficult. There is a little over 200 feet in descent and gain on the walk. Hiking poles are strictly optional – this is not a rugged trail. Bring hats, sunscreen, water, and snacks, if desired.

There are no facilities at the trailhead. Two places on the way to the starting point where you could potentially use restrooms are the Roots Farm Cafe, and the Sandia Ranger Station, both on NM 337.
