Phoenix, AZ: Valley of the Sun Chapter, Sunrise Trail Hike

Sunrise Trail is located in the Southern part of the Scottsdale McDowell Sonoran Preserve in the foothills of the McDowell Mountains. We will meet at Lost Dog Trailhead and walk to Sunrise Peak in the East, and return to the trailhead.

Chances are that it will be warm, so we will start at 7:00. If it’s forecasted to get HOT, we’ll start earlier and notify registrants 2 days prior.

Route Description:

Starting from Lost Dog Trailhead we will walk Eastward along Sunrise Trail for 2.8 miles, climbing gradually about 1100 ft to the base of Sunrise Peak. From there it’s only another 200 ft to the top of Sunrise Peak, which has spectacular views in all directions. Those who don’t want to do that last climb can stay at the Hitching Post, a spot along Sunrise Trail, and enjoy the scenery there. We will then return the way we came along Sunrise Trail to Lost Dog TH.

The lower sections of the trail are a bit rocky, so hiking poles will come in handy for most hikers.
