Hike approximately 4.5 miles roundtrip from Rehoboth Beach to Thompson Island Nature Preserve. Thompson Island Nature Preserve is an ecological and cultural site located between Rehoboth & Dewey Beach. The peninsula is a spiritual site for Native Americans (Nanticoke) so access is restricted to 1.4 miles out and back.
Our walk will be on sidewalks and streets from Rehoboth Beach to the entrance of the preserve. The Thompson Island Trail meanders through a mature upland hardwood and confer forest before traversing a small glade where we can catch a glimpse of the tidal marsh. There is a scenic overlook near the Lewes and Rehoboth Canal. The trail is crushed stone and natural surface.
We will meet at the Rehoboth Beach Visitor Center at 501 Rehoboth Ave, Rehoboth Beach, DE. Parking is free this time of year. If the lot is full, you can find street parking nearby. There are bathrooms at the nearby Grove Park. We will begin walking at 10am.
