This hike offers a great way to participate in the Global Camino! Be prepared for cold-weather hiking…or not! Waterton Canyon offers a pleasant out-and-back route that takes you along a gravel road that follows the South Platte River. There are many opportunities to spot wildlife on the surrounding cliffs, especially big horn sheep.
This route offers you the opportunity to “create your own hike”. The 12+ mile trail affords you the opportunity to walk whatever length you’re comfortable taking at your own pace, whether it’s 2 miles, 6 miles, 10 or more! While restrooms are available in the parking lot and at the trailhead, be sure to bring water to support the length you plan to walk.
To get there, take C-470 to the Wadsworth exit and head south. After about 2 miles, turn left on S Platte Canyon / Waterton Road. The Waterton Canyon/Kassler Trailhead parking lot is about 1/4 mile up on your left. We’ll meet near the restroom that’s in the parking lot right next to Waterton road.
Please dress for the weather, bring adequate water, and a snack. Consider bringing micro-spikes/Yaktrax for possible icy spots along the trail. If you use poles, bring them for extra stability. What: A “roll your own” out-and-back hike on the 12+ mile Waterton Canyon Trail.
When: Saturday, January 10th, 9:00 AM MST.
Parking: Waterton/Kassler Trailhead parking lot
Restrooms: Available in the parking lot, at the start of the trail, and approximately every mile or two along the trail.
