Directions: Take I-40 East, and turn south onto Hwy. 337 at Tijeras. Continue traveling south for a few miles. We will meet in the parking lot for Pine Flat Picnic Area which is on the left as you are traveling down Hwy. 337. When you turn in on the gravel drive, bear to the right. The walk begins from that parking area on the right. The parking area is of a good size.
The walking route I will take you on is approximately 3.5 miles in length. This walk is on dirt and rocky pathways. I recommend hiking poles, especially if you are used to using them as some areas are more difficult to navigate over some larger rocks.
The trails at this location are fun to explore. You’ll hear plenty of bird calls, see lizards and possibly other wildlife. We will be walking through forest, so there will be shade from time to time. It is a beautiful area to walk. We will take the Pine Flat Connector trail, Pine Loop, Gamble Oak, and back to the parking area on Gamblespur.
Elevation gain is 360 feet. Dress appropriately for the weather. Bring water, a hat, and sunscreen. Allow for a bit less than 2 hours of walking time depending on how fast or slow everyone is walking. There are restrooms in the parking area in Pine Flat.
When we finish the walk, let’s travel back to Tijeras to the Roots Farm Cafe, 11784 NM-337, Tijeras, NM 87059. As you are traveling north on 337, the cafe will be on your right. The food is good and there are tables inside and outside the cafe.
