Phoenix, AZ: Valley of the Sun Chapter, South Mountain Urban & Mountain Mix

This is the 1st of four back-to-back long hikes and provides a mix of terrain and a little bit of elevation to simulate a typical easy day on the Camino (like leaving Leon). The purpose of this series of walks is to help pilgrims dial in their gear (shoes, socks, pack, rubbing, pain, etc.) and their fitness. Join us for one or all of the walks in this series.
Total distance: ~11 miles (7 miles EASY and 4 miles MODERATE)
Elevation gain: 400 ft
Time: 5-6 hours with optional stop for coffee and restrooms
We will begin walking from Walmart on 24th Street to the Highline Canal, then along Baseline Rd with an optional coffee stop at Human Bean (but after 4 years no one has stopped!) We will then proceed to the Javelina Trailhead and walk to the Pima Canyon Trailhead via Beverly Canyon and Pima Loop. There is a bathroom about 5 miles in and we will refill aqua or use servicio. We will continue along the Pima Canyon Road to Beverly Canyon and then retrace our steps. There are a few rocky sections on Beverly Canyon but the rest of the walk is urban canal and wide gravel fire road with gentle elevation gains.
