Our last Caminito of 2024 connects Manhattan and Brooklyn. This year, we’ve walked together in Staten Island, Queens, and the Bronx, so as 2024 winds down we will walk together in Manhattan and Brooklyn. This Caminito will be an approximately 4-mile walk over about 2.5-3.5 hours, starting at the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge and ending at Ikea in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Hat tip to Christine of Shorewalkers for the route!
Meet: 9am Saturday, December 7 at Chambers and Centre Streets in Manhattan, in the plaza across from the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge walkway. The closest subway stops are the 4/5/6 Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall, J/Z Chambers St., and R/W City Hall. The A/C and 1/2/3 Chambers St. are within a few blocks as well. As always, check mta.info for weekend service changes.
Route: After crossing the Brooklyn Bridge, we’ll make a restroom stop in Cadman Plaza. We’ll walk through Brooklyn Heights and Cobble Hill, cross over the BQE, and follow Red Hook’s main drag, Van Brunt Street, to Beard Street and our destination. Our walk officially ends at the NY Waterway Ikea ferry stop.
Restrooms: There is a Starbucks near our meeting place, we’ll make a restroom stop at Cadman Plaza just after we cross the Brooklyn Bridge, and there are several restrooms in Ikea.
Lunch: Ikea has a restaurant on the upper level and a bistro by the exit and checkouts; see the menus for both. The local Food Bazaar supermarket, nearby on Van Brunt Street, has a cafe serving sandwiches and pizza and an outdoor patio with fantastic water views.
Return: via 12:50pm NY Waterways Ikea Ferry (later departures are possible). The ferry to Pier 11/Wall Street takes 10 minutes. The same ferry continues 20 minutes more (with fabulous views), arriving at Pier 79/West 39th Street at 1:25pm. The B57 and B61 buses depart from outside Ikea. The South Brooklyn route of NYC Ferry serves the Red Hook/Atlantic Basin ferry stop, just under a mile back the way we came.
Bring: Water, hat, sunglasses, snacks. Food/drinks available for purchase at Ikea.
