Shifting Landscapes: A Weekend Pilgrim Retreat at the Monastery of Christ in the Desert in Abiquiu, NM

WHEN: FRIDAY afternoon OCTOBER 27 to SUNDAY afternoon OCTOBER 29

Abbot Christian and the monks of the Monastery of Christ in the Desert welcome us to take time out to reflect upon our past and future pilgrimages in this beautiful and tranquil setting. Brother Chrysostom, himself a pilgrim, will be our host and join us for group and individual conversations about our pilgrimages and their impact on our lives.

The weekend will begin with a welcome and meal on Friday evening and continue on Saturday morning with an early service followed by an approximately 4-hour hike along the beautiful Abiquiu Rim trail. Upon return we’ll have a communal meal, optional afternoon events, and an evening service and meal. Following the Sunday morning mass, we will have another hike and a picnic along the river before we depart on Sunday afternoon, with the option of an evening meal in Abiquiu before we go our separate ways. There will be time for quiet and reflection in keeping with the monastery’s Rule of St. Benedict.

Attendance is limited by the number of guest rooms available. Single and double rooms, some with shared bath, common spaces and kitchen facilities, range in price from $70 for a single room to $175 for a double, some with private baths, but most with shared baths. Rooms are described on the webpage. Meals are included in the price of the room. Monetary donations are also appreciated, and a bottle of wine for the Brothers is certainly welcome!

Reserving a room is your responsibility, as we cannot hold a block of rooms for the group. It is imperative that you make reservations as soon as possible because the space fills up. Note that there is a two-night minimum stay. We have chosen this particular weekend because as of February 28, all rooms were still available. The monastery is 75 miles from Santa Fe and accessed by Forest Road 151, a 13-mile long dirt road off US 84 northwest of Abiquiu.
