Westfield, NC: Raleigh Chapter, All NC Chapter Hike at Hanging Rock State Park

Two hike options: The longer hike will follow the Tory’s Den Trail to Moore’s Wall Loop. This combined trail will cover about 8.9 miles and is projected to take 4.5 hours to complete. It will take you by the Moore’s Observation Tower, which at 2,497′ elevation is the highest point in the Sauratown Mountains.

The shorter hike will follow the Ruben Mountain Trail, which is a shared hike/bridle trail, winding around Ruben Mountain. This 5.6 mile trail has milder elevation changes and is projected to take 2.5 hours to complete.

For those interested in a little extra, take the half-mile (round trip) Tory’s Den Cave and Waterfall Trail from the parking area down to view the cave and waterfall. Enjoy the Revolutionary War history at the trailhead.

All three trails are accessed from the parking area.

The trailhead is NOT at the park’s Visitor Center. It is located at: 1185 Charlie Young Road, Westfield, NC which is approximately 115 miles from RDU with an estimated travel time of 2 hours.

Gathering Time: 9:15 a.m. (as we did last year, we hope to have some breakfast treats from the Camino Bakery in Winston-Salem)

Starting Time: 9:30 a.m.

There are no restroom facilities at the trailhead. The last restroom facility before the trailhead is at Sauratown Mountain Country Store 3316 NC-66, King, NC 27021, about 5 minutes before reaching the parking area.

Post-hike Recovery: After the hike, join us for a re-visit to Pilot Mountain Vineyards, 1162 Bradley Rd., Pinnacle, NC for a picnic lunch, optional wine tasting, and camaraderie before we head east, south or west to our respective homes.
