Return with us to hike in Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park, which has the largest remaining natural stand of coast redwoods in the East Bay. Our loop route includes the Canyon, East Ridge, and Spring Trails. It begins with a steep uphill climb, eases into a pleasant hike underneath oaks and laurels along the ridgeline, and ends with a lovely two miles through the cool, redwood forest along Redwood Creek. If we’re lucky, we might come across the annual swarms of ladybugs! (Or more accurately, lady beetles.) Regardless, we’re sure to enjoy a wonderful day of Camino camaraderie and training. Hope you can join us!

Schedule: Meet us at 9:30 AM at the Canyon Meadow Staging Area, inside the Redwood Gate entrance of the park. There are several parking lots in the staging area – we’ll be at the last one closest to the Stream and Canyon Trailheads. If the lot is full, go back to a preceding one. Restrooms and water are available. There is little phone/data service in the staging area to contact us if you are running late. Please plan to arrive early to make the meetup time and/or use the facilities. We plan to have lunch at the Girl’s Camp campsite and expect to arrive back at the parking lot around 2:30 PM.

Level of Difficulty: Moderately difficult. About 7.5 miles and 768 feet of elevation gain. As mentioned, there is a steep 1/2-mile climb up with a few more moderate ones afterwards. This hike is ideal for those who can hike for 3-4 hours and have some recent experience with steep inclines.

Advance online registration is required. Click the Register button to sign up. Because space is limited, please register if/when you are certain you can attend. Thank you!

Cancellation: If you are unable to attend, please email us as soon as possible at norcal@americanpilgrims.org so we can offer your space to someone else.

Getting There: There are multiple entrances to the park. Enter through Redwood Gate on Redwood Road about two miles east of Skyline Blvd. From Highway 13 (both north and southbound), take the Redwood Road exit and go east (uphill). At the top of the hill, cross over Skyline Blvd. After the Big Bear and MacDonald Staging Areas, Redwood Gate will be on the left.

Carpooling: On the registration form is a link to an online “Carpool Bulletin Board” to post a message if you need a ride or can give one. Carpooling is highly recommended since the park is extremely popular on weekends.

What to Bring: Dress for the weather (layers work well) and bring a bag lunch, snacks, water and sun protection (hat, sunscreen). Good hiking shoes and poles are recommended. Poison oak is present throughout the park. If you are sensitive, we recommend long sleeve shirts and pants and bringing your preferred treatment, in case of contact.

Post-Hike Social: For those interested, we’ll regroup for drinks and Mexican bites after the hike at Degrees Plato in Oakland’s Laurel District at 4251 MacArthur Blvd. (~5 mile from park). There’s free parking in the adjacent lot off of High Street and an outdoor beer garden.
