DESCRIPTION: This scenic trail (4.2 miles out and back) winds through lush forests of Ponderosa pine and Douglas fir. As you ascend through the valley, there are breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. There is an elevation gain of 1,272 feet. You can see from the photo that the trail is rather rocky. The ascent is gradual at first, then becomes a more strenuous effort. I stop often to take in the views and to see where I’ve been. We’ll take this at a moderate pace, so don’t be put off by the climb.  Allow about 3 hours.

DIRECTIONS: Follow State Road 333 off of Tramway Blvd. NE. It winds up and around, past the La Luz Trail Head. There is a sign at the parking lot. If you’d rather carpool, let me know in the response. We can meet at Sandia Casino and go from there.
NOTES: There are no facilities at the parking lot trailhead. Bring a hat, sunscreen, poles, and plenty of water. I like to have a snack at the saddle, our end point. There are no picnic tables, but there are tree trunks and rocks. Oh, so comfy!
