Join NYC pilgrims for a Caminito in Fort Totten & Little Neck Bay on Saturday, September 14
Please join us on Saturday, September 14 for a Caminito in northeastern Queens. We will hike around the edge of Little Neck Bay, walking 8 to 9 miles over 4 to 5 hours. We will meet at 9:50 AM on the LIRR concourse at Grand Central Terminal near the bathrooms and coffee/tea kiosks. Give yourself 10-15 minutes to get there from the main level of Grand Central. We will catch the 10:02 on the Port Washington line to Little Neck station. Please buy a CityTicket to Little Neck prior to meeting us. If you are running late please go right to the track; you can purchase a ticket onboard but there is a surcharge. Drivers should meet us on the eastbound platform at Little Neck station at 10:40. There is a fee-based parking lot there. Drivers will have to take a train, taxi or rideshare back to their cars at Little Neck station from Bayside where the walk ends, which is only 5 minutes by train.
The hike will be mostly flat on quiet side streets, sidewalks, dirt paths and paved greenways through city parkland and residential areas. The highlight will be visiting Fort Totten, a Civil War era fort, now partly city parkland, part FDNY/NYPD facility and still part federal military base. There are options for early outs along the way. There are opportunities for bathroom breaks and snack breaks en route. Please bring water and snacks, and there are places to buy both along the way. There will not be an extended lunch stop, just some brief 5-10 minute stops. For those interested there will be a post-Caminito meal at Sangarita’s Spanish restaurant at approximately 4pm in Bayside near the train station.
Please let us know you’re coming with an RSVP to NewYorkCity@americanpilgrims.org, and let us know if you plan to participate in the post-hike meal too. In case of foul weather the rain date will be Sunday, September 15.
Your hike leader is Paul Brunn, who walked parts of the Camino Ingles and del Norte last year as well as pilgrim paths in Germany and Switzerland and hiking trails in the US and worldwide.
Hope to see you!
